Lesson Title: Word pattern spellers/ long and short vowels
Grade level: Second grade level
Theoretical research: Ganske, Word Sorts and More, page 204-211
Standards: EE-K9a, EE-K10b
Content learning objectives: The learning objective for the students is for them to be able to tell the difference between long and short vowel sounds. They will be able to tell which is which as well as what doesn’t belong with them.
Procedure: First I will figure out what the students prior knowledge is on the subject. I will have them all in a classroom setting and hold up the pictures and see whether or noth they can tell which is long and which is short. I then will elaborate on what makes each of them a long or short vowel, and how you can tell by hearing the words. Then we will do the activity in small groups. They will rotate through the long and short vowels so that they each will work with a, e, i, o, and u.
Assessment plan: we will come back to how we started I will show the cards and have the students tell me if it is a long or short vowel.
